The Inya Institute (www.inyainstitute.org) is a Yangon-based higher-education institute dedicated to advancing the social sciences, the arts and humanities as they are related to Myanmar. A non-political, non-religious, non-profit, and non-degree granting organization, it is a member center of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC)

It seeks to build research capacity for young local researchers, to foster scholarly exchange between local and international researchers, and to create original scholarship for and with the assistance of international and local scholars. It further aims to raise the general public’s understanding of the country’s cultural diversity and multi-faceted legacy.

Background information – Job-specific

The Inya Institute seeks a highly motivated, knowledgeable, and service-oriented Digital Resources and Information Assistant to assist the team in producing and managing the digital resources and information that supports its training, research, heritage conservation, and fellowships programs and the dissemination of these activities. This includes working closely with the team as well as assisting guests, local and international, during their visit to the library, in their search for references. This position is funded by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

Main Responsibilities

  • Digital Resource Management (50%)

-Manage the intake, maintenance, and sustainability of digitized materials that support the institute’s digital resource collections;

-Index and catalogue new book arrivals in the online catalogue (www.library-inyainstitute.org);

-Update the digital platform (www.archive-inyainstitute.org) whenever new digital materials are ready to be processed;

-Update and maintain the institute’s Facebook page;

-Assist with the acquisitions of library references in print format (Myanmar and English-language references);

  • Information Management (35%)

-Assist the team in translating from English to Myanmar some of the materials published online;

-Assist the team in developing digital teaching materials;

-Assist the team in producing the annual newsletter (in both electronic and print formats);

  • Other Responsibilities (15%)

-Assist the team in developing and carrying out research projects, some of them being undertaken with local and international partners;

-Assist the team in planning and holding public events;

-Welcome and assist Myanmar and International visitors and library users in their search for library references;

The position may involve occasional travel and field work within Myanmar to support the documentation of some of the projects developed by the institute.

Required skills and Experience

-Excellent attention to detail;

-Excellent time management and organizational skills;

-Knowledge of Microsoft Office;

-Strong interest in acquiring new computer skills (NGL Library software; Collective Access software);

-Strong interest in social sciences and humanities as they are related to Myanmar and its cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity;

-Good English-language comprehension skills;
-Fluency in Myanmar language (especially excellent writing skills);

-Good communication and interpersonal skills.

How to apply

Candidates should ideally be of graduate level or equivalent with a passion for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and an interest in digital technology and its potential for teaching and research.

Graduates from Myanmar Universities’ Library and Information Studies Departments are particularly encouraged to apply. Other graduates with Social Sciences, Humanities, Communication, Public Relations, and Computer Sciences degrees will be also considered.
